Three ACT figure skaters, from a team of 12, have
proven again that they are a team to look out for in 2011, by placing
in the top 3 and improving on their personal best scores from 2010.
With another four ACT skaters making it into the top ten for their
divisions. The team competed in the Hollins Trophy at the Canterbury
Olympic Ice Rink, Sydney, over 10-13 June 2011.
The first competitors, on Friday 11 June, in the Preliminary Division
with strong performances were Tanisha Jory, Emily Locke and Alexandra
McLachlan. These were followed by with a personal best score for
Gemma Williams who placed 12th in the Elementary Division of 32
skaters.
Saturday continued with silver for Mia Connell-Whitty and a personal
best of 9th place for Emily Leong, both competing in the Pre-Primary
Division of 23 skaters.
After a bad fall in her short program, ACT’s rising star,
Endillion Kenyon required a mammoth effort in her freeskate program
the next day to place 8th overall. While first time Hollins competitior,
Sarah Batey competed strongly in both programs. Both skaters competed
in the Primary Division of 21.
Justine Thornton put herself into a commanding position for her
Freeskate on Sunday with an outstanding performance in the Intermediate
Division short program placing 1st with Charlotte Kesteven placing
13th. After completing their freeskate programs on Sunday with gold
for Justine and a 10th PB placing for Charlotte.
Outstanding short program performances continued on Sunday afternoon
and evening with two other ACT rising stars. Eiland Kenyon placed
1st in Novice and Karuna Henderson placed 4th in Junior Divison.
Final day, Monday 13 June 2011, concluded with Freeskate programs
in the Novice and Junior Divisions. A very strong finish for Eiland
placed her with gold while Karuna completed her program with a PB
of 9th place.
The Hollins Trophy has been a major technical competition on the
Australian figure skating calendar for 43 years and is considered
as one of the major events prior to state and national championships.
Coaches Dalene Murray, Miram Manzano, Rinat Sabitov and Sally Patton
all agree that their ACT skaters are continuing to produce a team
to watch out for in Australian skating.
The next two ACT competitions will be held at the Phillip ice rink
on 20-21 August 2011, where skaters from the ACT and interstate
will compete in the Federation Challenge and Reg Park Artistic.
